The cabinets are the real heart of any kitchen-remodeling job. They probably have the greatest impact on the overall appearance of the kitchen, and can be the largest single expense. Understanding cabinet styles and construction before going shopping or talking to a kitchen designer about your new kitchen plans is worthwhile.
There are three general categories of kitchen cabinets: custom, semi-custom, and stock. There are different varieties of each.
Custom cabinets are the most expensive type of cabinets. A cabinet shop makes custom cabinets for a specific kitchen from a plan designed by an architect or a kitchen designer. The maker of the custom cabinets usually installs and configures them to create an almost unlimited variety of storage and organizational solutions from any wood or color combination and in almost any set of dimensions or style.
Their versatility comes at a cost, however because they are the most expensive type of cabinets. A common figure might be a $100 to $850 per running foot but can go as high as $1,000. (Note: The price includes lazy Susan’s and pullouts). A running foot refers to one foot in width that includes both the upper and the lower cabinets. Most common kitchens end up in the $450 to $850 range. This includes the cabinets, installation, and handles only. It does not include the counter tops, plumbing, wiring, flooring, or anything else.
Probably the most commonly installed cabinets by contractors are semi-custom cabinets. Home improvements stores, kitchen designers, or contractors order semi-custom cabinets from the manufacturer. The majority of semi-custom cabinets are ordered in stock sizes then a few of the cabinets are custom-sized to fit into a particular space or to fill a specific need. Manufacturers can custom size the cabinets or they can alter after delivery.
Semi-custom cabinets are available in many styles, wood, and colors. They often average about $500 per running foot (installed), but cost can vary tremendously. Outlets that sell these cabinets will often have a connection to contractors who can install the cabinets as well as any necessary plumbing and electrical work.
Stock cabinets are the most inexpensive way to get a new kitchen in your home or refacing the old ones. Stock cabinets are in stock at most home improvements stores and some lumber yards. They come in a limited variety of colors and sizes. However, with a little additional work and some classic looking hardware, you can make these cabinets look great in your kitchen. In fact, one the kitchen is completed it is difficult to tell from out ward appearances if the project used custom, semi-custom, or stock cabinets. The cabinets shown on this page are custom made cabinet that build with highest quality of lumber.
